How To Paint The Ceiling Like an Expert

Painting the ceiling is no easy task. It’s challenging enough because you have to reach high up while being balanced on a ladder. It’s either you get paint on the walls or have paint dripping all over yourself. Read on to find out how you can paint the ceiling like a professional painter!

1. Buy the right tools
This is the first thing to do as experts cannot work without their tools. You would need a paint roller with a handle. With this, you can paint the ceiling while standing on the floor instead of being perched up on a ladder. You also need a thick-nap roller if your ceiling is textured and a smooth or shorter nap if your ceiling is smooth.

2. Clear the room
Relocate all the furniture. Wrap up items with newspaper. Line the floor too with newspapers and use tape to hold these in place. Use tape as well to mask the area where the wall and the ceiling meet. If you are painting the walls too in the same colour, then you don’t have to do this.

3. Prime the ceiling
This is done to make sure that the surface is protected with a stain-blocking primer as well as to ensure that the paint is applied evenly. With a primer, only one coat of paint is needed.

4. Make an outline
This is the step where you make a cut-in line on the ceiling. This is a strip of about 2-3 inches where the wall meets the ceiling. You should begin in the corner of the ceiling which has the shortest length. Use a paintbrush for this and you will need to climb on a ladder for this step.

5. Start painting!
Do this when the cut-in line hasn’t dried. This is done in order to avoid a visible line from forming. What you should do is to roll the paint roller in the deep end of the paint tray and then roll it back and forth at where the shallow end is to remove excess paint. This also makes sure that the roller has even coverage. Make a zigzag pattern with the roller on the ceiling, and then go over it again to smooth out the paint. Once the first layer has dried, you may want to go over it with a second coating. If you do, repeat the same steps starting with the cut-in line and ending with the roller.

Painting the ceiling is actually a pretty easy job; it’s just that not many know the tips how to do so properly. These 5 steps will ensure that your ceiling will be painted well as though you had hired professional help to paint and decorate your house.
