I've been doing things like that for over 45 years, and everything I learned to do was by practical application. Go slowly when you 1st do something new. I will simply look at what I'm about to do and figure how the thing I need to fix is put together, then I proceed slowly until I see how it works. Educate yourself by asking questions (like this Yahoo answers format), read instructions, and practice something new by doing small sections at a time. Don't tear into anything until you're comfortable that you know what you are about to do. Pay attention when you take something apart such as a faucet. Don't force things; many times you aren't doing it right and it will lead to a mess. Everything has logical application. For example shingles start from the bottom of the roof and overlap to shed water. Good luck!

Home supply stores hold frequent seminars at their store at no charge to educate people in certain skills by demonstration. They cover most common household do it yourself projects.

Got to Home Depot get a credit card and a DIY book. Follow the instructions very carefully and when you call the handy man to repair what you did PAY ATTENTION!

Research, research, research. Check all the things you need and do not skimp on tools when you need them. Also, know when to throw in the towel.

Get general all purpose book, ask professionals, common sense, practice, time, research & patience.

There are books found at stores like Menards, Home Depot, Lowes, etc… on anything you plan on doing. There are books even at the library plus websites. I raised a child by myself (husband died in car accident) on one income so I had to learn many how to do it stuff from repairing my own car & appliances, roofing, ceramic tiles, sheetrock, new sub floors, insulation, cement, etc…

Below is one website with various How to do it info.
